History of Santa Monica
Santa Monica, located on the western edge of Los Angeles County, California, has a rich and diverse history that spans thousands of years. Originally inhabited by the Tongva people, who called the area “Kecheek” meaning “the gathering place,” Santa Monica later became a significant site for Spanish colonization in the 18th century.
In 1769, Spanish explorers led by Gaspar de Portolà and Father Juan Crespí reached the area and established the San Gabriel Mission nearby. The land eventually came under Mexican rule after gaining independence from Spain in the early 19th century.
In the late 19th century, the arrival of the railroad transformed Santa Monica from a sleepy settlement into a popular seaside resort destination. The completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1875 connected Santa Monica to Los Angeles, attracting tourists and new residents to the area.
Santa Monica experienced further growth and development in the early 20th century, with the establishment of the iconic Santa Monica Pier in 1909 and the construction of grand hotels and amusement parks along the waterfront.
