History of Thousand Oaks
Thousand Oaks, located in Ventura County, California, has a history that dates back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Chumash people, who lived in villages and relied on agriculture, fishing, and hunting for their livelihood.
In the late 19th century, the area that would become Thousand Oaks was part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant, which was used for cattle ranching. The name “Thousand Oaks” is attributed to the abundance of oak trees in the area.
In the 20th century, Thousand Oaks experienced significant growth and development. The Janss Investment Company purchased the land in the 1920s and began planning a master-planned community. The city was officially incorporated in 1964.
